Dine Originals Week November 2012

November 10th, 2012    •  by Bethia    •   36 Comments »

Dine Originals Week starts on Monday and runs until Sunday November 18th. Dine Originals is a group of 50 Columbus locally and independently owned and operated restaurants and the biannual Dine Originals Weeks are always a great excuse to try new restaurants or revisit old favorites. I enjoyed this note from Scott Heimlich, owner of one of our partner restaurants, Barcelona:

Hearing about all of the different strategies and traditions (restaurant-goers) used for managing Dine Originals Week is one of my favorite aspects of the event. We have heard from supporters who choose 8 favorite menus, put them in a hat and draw 4 out and schedule the week around them, others have rituals about going to a restaurant they have never tried, and I have a friend who picks our two most expensive member restaurants and uses the opportunity to experience the magic of kitchens she cannot usually afford while she completes graduate school.

We’ve had a look through all of the 50 plus menus and here are a few of the dishes that caught our eye:

Pork Belly corn dogs at Black Creek Bistro.
Blackened grouper cheeks with lemon havarti grits at Bodega (lunch menu)
Quince five spice steamed bun at Deepwood (Lunch menu)
Orange Julius dessert at Deepwood with vanilla Bundt Cake and tangerine glaze, candied kumquat and orange Julius Smoothie Sip ($20 dinner menu)
The Bill Murray vs Kathy Bates celebrity death match menu at Surly Girl, with Life Aquatic crab dip and not-so-fried green tomatoes.
Roasted Onion, Brown Ale and Aged Cheddar Soup at the Worthington Inn.
The warm housemade ricotta with Fennel Seed Grissini, Kale Chips & Fresh Figs at Z Cucina.
Bourbon ice cream made with the new Watershed bourbon at the Vienna Ice Cafe.

But of course there are lots of other great dishes and menus and there’s something for every taste. In addition to the published menus, both Alana’s and Skillet will be offering daily surprises. As well as dinner options there are some fantastic lunch deals at restaurants including Rigsby’s and Barcelona and the highly recommended brunch at Pistacia Vera.

There are also some new places to check out. Babushka’s Kitchen have just reopened at their new Sinclair Road location. Barrel 44 is a new Dine Originals member with two locations in the Short North and Bexley.

Vegetarians are well catered for, especially those who love seasonal squash and pumpkin dishes. Check out the vegetarian menus at Deepwood and Black Creek Bistro.

We have a great giveaway for you! Comment on this post and tell us which of the Dine Originals week menus most appeals to you by 5pm on Tuesday November 13th and you could win a $50 gift certificate to use at your Dine Originals restaurant of choice!

View all of the menus online here or pick up a copy of this week’s Columbus Alive to see them all in one place.

The Black Creek Bistro menu was definitely droll worthy.

  2. I think the menu that most appeals to me is The Refectory. I’ve been meaning to try it for awhile and the Bourbon Pork Tenderloin with the Pumpkin Creme Brulee sounds amazing!!!

  3. I’d love to try Barcelona or Barrel 44!

    The Refectory’s menu looks great.

  5. I have never been to Skillet for dinner (silly, right?!) and am tempted by all their fall offerings. I’m always up for an Alana’s surprise, too.

  6. They all look so good! I think my favorites are Worthington Inn, Surly Girl, and Trattoria Roma. Any would be great for birthday dinner!

All the pumpkin related menu items makes me happy, including the pumpkin pierogies from Babushka’s Kitchen.

Deepwood is my main objective this time around.

  9. Worthington Inn and Skillet look great!

  10. I’m now dreaming of Refectory’s Roasted Fresh Goat Cheese, followed by Beef Shoulder Tenderloin, and finish with Alsatian Apple Tarte. Hmmm…

  11. Skillet, always impressive, often surprisingly so.

  12. Would love to try Skillet!

So hard to beat the Deepwood $20 menu.

  14. Deepwood it is this time around! Never been there but it’s definitely tempting.

  15. Definitely want to try out a place I’ve never been this time around.

The Top wins, per usual, in my book. They always stick with a traditional offering, which is in line with their style, but its also a tremendous value.

  17. So many beets, yum! The menu at Black Creek Bistro looks amazing, especially the pork belly corn dogs. I love unique interpretations of fair food 🙂

  18. I definitely plan on making a reservation at Deepwood for DOW. It’ll be my first time there!

  19. I love Columbus independent restaurants and have been to so many Dine Originals participants. I would love to try Deepwood, or Skillet this next time around, with all the fall flavors on these chilly evenings!

  20. I am looking at G. Michaels with the most interest. I haven’t been there in years, and always want to go. Think this will be the perfect reason 🙂

  21. Deepwood yummy….
Looks like my diet starts a week later.

  22. There are a few that are particularly appealing, but I think I’ll go with Deepwood.

  23. Can not wait to try out The Refectory for the 1st time!

  24. The Bourbon ice cream at the Vienna Ice Cafe definitely has my attention! How can you NOT want that!?! Just the thought of it makes my toes curl! ;D

  25. Was just commenting to my husband that the Watershed Bourbon gelato sounds like a worthwhile treat to try!

  26. Cant beat that katzingers price! Just the sandwich itself is already cheaper this week AND we get a side + dessert. mmmm

  27. Mmm, Barcelona, you’re singing my song, sister!

  28. I’ll be checking out Deepwood this time, and maybe G. Michael’s if I can sneak in another night.

  29. So many delicious sounding meals. Some that I’m interested in are Vino Vino, The Worthington Inn, The Refectory sounds scrumptious, and might consider a trip out to Granville to The Oak Room. Local Roots and Bel Lago menus look delightful and they’re near my folks, too. This is all without knowing Alana’s daily surprises.

  30. Barcelona! Love that they almost always have a vegetarian option. Already have reservations!

  31. I’ve been wanting to try G. Michael’s for dinner, and the red rice stuffed trout finished off with a gingersnap tart sounds like perfection!

  32. Yum, G. Michael’s!

  33. The competition is now closed. We picked random number 31. Congratulations to Jaclyn.

  34. I absolutely adore Chef Richard at The Refectory. He’s a magician in the kitchen and his menu’s are always amazing. The desserts always rock my world!

  35. Going to G.Michael’s tonight!

  36. Reading about this initiative to get residents of our wonderful city out and about to experience our local food is a nice change. Picking out of a pile of eight menus sounds like something I will definitely try in the future. Babushka’s kitchen might be a must for me – I have Slovak heritage and I’d love to learn more about the modern and traditional tastes local chefs create.
