Saturday was harvest festival at the North Market and there were pumpkins and squashes galore. Lots of oranges and yellows with dried corn, pumpkins and sunflowers. There were arts and crafts for children, face painting and hoards of people. Sadly I had to work earlier in morning, so I missed the fun of the apple and pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread baking competitions.

Ghost squashes at Toad Hill Farms, ready for halloween.

Apples galore

Apples galore

I was excited to get the last pint of amber raspberries at Rhoads’. Apparently they will have more next week, I love that raspberry season lasts so long. I also got the last tub of lemon quark at Blue Jacket Dairy and some more of their Gretna Grillin’ cheese and silver lake chevre. The lemon quark is fantastic on Eleni Christina toasted raisin walnut bread.

Other purchases this week were a kabocha squash at Wayward farms and beets from Elizabeth Telling. I also bought plum tomatoes, garlic and onions, to make some tomato sauce for the freezer.

I still have lots of cilantro left from last week so I decided to make some tomatillo salsa and bought some cherry bomb peppers for it.

I bought three types of radishes. Daikon (Toad Hill), french breakfast radishes (Elizabeth Telling) and some rat’s tail radishes (?) from wayward farms. I could have bought purple plum radishes as well, but I think three might be enough for one week. I am thinking of a radish salad although I did see some interesting cooked radish recipes.
